I have no idea if this book is any good, but I do know the professor uses it a lot. We will be focusing on chapters 1-7, if anyone happens to have the book. Syllabus: • Logic and proofs, induction • Sets, Boolean algebra, functions, relations, recursion • Algorithms and analysis, graphs, trees • Elementary number theory and cryptography • Counting methods, permutations, combinations, finite probability • Recurrence relations I have no idea why he formatted it this way, but there you go. I realize my best bet may be to just grab the textbook as soon as possible and just have at it, but I received a copy of this semester's syllabus from a friend about 20 minutes ago, and I probably won't be able to get the book for quite a while with Christmas this close around the corner. Discrete maths is different, I didn't need all of my knowledge from high school, some yeah, but not all. I found it easier to learn as It was just like learning something new and not repeating what was taught in HS. I found direct proofs difficult, I just couldn't get my head around how they got from a to b to c to QED. But by the end of the semester I finally understood it. A lot of students find Proof by Induction difficult, I was directed to this comment that explains it really well, but funnily enough I didn't find inductive proofs difficult because it made sense to have the base step, then the inductive step etc. I thought counting was gonna be easy as because cmon, I know how to count, but turns out it's not as easy as I thought and you really have to think about the situation that is being presented to you and which way you should count it isn't always obviously.
Discrete Maths is wonderful, but a lot of my ability to excel in this subject was down to my lecturer and tutor, he was the most outstanding teacher and I'm afraid of doing any other Math units that he doesn't teach. You sound smart, and you sound like you're interested, just keep up with the work and you'll do fine.
