My work around for my HP 5470c scanner (also discontinued by HP and yes I knew it before upgrading) was to plug it into my wife's XP machine.

Yes - I knew it was a discontinued product but the HP web site did not indicate that they would not issue Vista drivers until well after Vista was released. - I've tried XP drivers but they dont seem to work. OK, I managed to get the HP Scanjet 3400c scanner working under Vista. Hp Elitebook 8470p Firmware Update on this page. This despite the fact that HP says it won't work. It does work.

Did you try to run the install program in XP compatibility mode (after uninstalling, if possible, anything left over from your original install)? Try installing the XP version software using Compatibility mode set to XP with SP2 and Run as Administrator? If it's USB connected remember you must disconnect the USB cable from the PC and the printer and turn off the printer before starting to install the HP software. Check that there is no HP software for the scanner installed already; if there is uninstall it and delete the scanner from the Control Panel / Scanner folder and reboot -- without that cable connected! You might have to go into Services and disable Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) but I have a much older HP SJ5P scanner working using the TWAIN conection.
